Untere Pekingstrasse
Housing, Dortmund
2022
For a conversion in Dortmund, an apartment block from the Art Nouveau period is being remodelled in the lower Pekingstrasse. The detached apartment block in Art Nouveau style initially raised many questions.
Why is there a three-storey corner building in a residential area otherwise characterised by semi-detached houses? What expectations did its builders have of the neighbouring buildings? Why does the building have two ornate exterior facades when only one faces the street?
No information could be found on this due to a lack of building documents, and yet the Less Plus architectural office has found an architectural answer that does justice to the peculiar building. A steel sculpture was added to the two gable ends, visually extending the building and enhancing the quality of living with newly created balconies. In addition, the historical façade elements were largely restored or accentuated in special places.
Only natural materials were used for Pekingstrasse, which are handcrafted, sustainable and timeless.
In particular, materials that also convey a natural feel were selected by the architects, as these also convey a large part of the unique atmosphere of the Art Nouveau building. These materials also have the ability to age gracefully and therefore emphasise the charm of the house.
