Wabi-Sabi

The research involves a continuous attempt to make architectural atmospheres tangible and deals with the topic of the Japanese term “wabi-sabi”. It sees itself as a key word of Japanese aesthetics and reflects a variety of the fundamental considerations of Zen Buddhist philosophy. At the same time, it is pronounced that antirationalism makes it virtually impossible to define and, according to Zen teaching, it is not conveyed by written or spoken word. As a result, one has to carefully avoid a clear definition of the term in every respect, which is often not taken into account in attempts to integrate this term into the West. In the research, an attempt is made to symbolize the complex term “wabi-sabi” by dealing with the historical circumstances, the discussions of selected artists and cinematic works.
