The guest’s house is located at the intersection of several landscapes on the island of Amrum. It is part of the outskirts of Nebel and is thus on the central ridge of the geest, which is used for agriculture and settlement.
What the design creates is a place with a double effect. It creates it on site by structuring the surroundings in the best possible way and welcoming visitors, and it creates it from a distance because it becomes a point of reference and gives its significance an appropriate form. The house joins the ranks of the island’s special buildings: church, mill and lighthouse.
Turning the traditional Frisian house inside out, it transforms the solidity of the outer walls into a load-bearing internal structure and in some places the outer skin is almost non-existent.
